The region Ilztal & Dreiburgenland
The region “Ilztal & Dreiburgenland” ist located between the city of Passau and the “Nationalpark Bavarian Forest”, close to the borders of the Czech Republic and Austria. The name “Ilztal & Dreiburgenland” comes from and is characterized the river “Ilz”, its valley and the three castles: Fürstenstein, Englburg and Saldenburg.
The river is often called "The Black Pearl", because of its blackish color. It rises from many small streams and has its origin in the crests of the Bavarian Forest. The Ilz is the last white water of Eastern Bavaria and a 68 km long tributary of the Danube.
Light floodplain forests, lush green hills, rugged granite walls and dark lakes make landscape very versatile. In between, you can find many hiking trails, points of interests, people and their stories …
